From the first days of bringing home your puppy to obedience training for your rescue, our Nelson dog training classes are an effective and fun way to set your dog up for success.

  • Puppy Socialization

    Socialization is the most important element of your puppy’s first 16 weeks of life. The goal of this class is to set your pup up for life as a friendly, trusting confident dog and prevent future behavioural problems.

  • Basic Manners

    This is an intro level obedience class for dogs who are least 4 months old. Great for a new dog who could use some basic skills, a brush up for your old pal or graduates of puppy class. It is never to late to start!

    Join me for class to build your dog's trail skills so they can join you on your adventures as a well behaved and reliable companion. Plus, great mental enrichment for them before you start your day!

Upcoming Classes

Puppy Socialization + Basic Manners

Classes are Tuesday evenings starting April 29th and run for 6 weeks. Online Orientation is at 6pm on April 29th for both classes. Weeks 2- 6 are in person at Lucky Leash. Puppies at 6pm Manners at 7:15pm.

Terrific Trail Dog

Sessions start April 30th and June 4th and run for 4 weeks meeting Wednesday mornings at 7:30am at trailheads around Nelson. With enough interest we may add an evening session as well.

  • Socialization is the most important element of your puppy’s first 16 weeks of life. This doesn't just mean meeting dogs. This means setting them up with positive experiences with a WIDE range of sights, sounds, shapes, things and creatures. The goal of this class is also to teach YOU to set your pup up for life as a friendly, confident dog and prevent future behavioral problems.

    • All puppies ages 8 weeks to 5 months are eligible

    • All puppies must have completed at least their first round of parvovirus and distemper vaccinations

    • In addition to a variety of socialization exercises with different objects, noises, body handling and basic care we will also cover basic obedience training including the cues "bed," "sit," "down," "leave it, "touch", learn about dog body language and healthy place in addition to addressing top puppy challenges such as nipping, chewing, jumping and housetraining.

    • Classes take place at 6 pm on Tuesday evenings for an hour and run for 6 weeks. The first week is an online orientation followed by 5 hour long in person sessions. Orientation goes over how dogs learn, dog body language and play, and addresses your questions.

    • $300, includes class time, handouts and homework and access to me for questions in between.

    • Small class size - Only 4 dogs per class

  • This is an intro level class for dogs who are least 16 weeks of age.

    • Skills covered include recall, leave it, loose leash walking, stay and more.

    • All dogs must have up to date distemper and parvovirus vaccinations, or have undergone titre testing found to be adequate under direction of a veterinarian.

    • Dogs with a bite history or who are fearful of other dogs within 2 meters of them are not eligible for group classes.

    • There are 6, hour long classes on Tuesday nights. Orientation takes place online at 6pm the first week and is followed by 5 in person sessions at 7:15pm. Orientation goes over how dogs learn, training basics, dog body language and play, and addresses your questions.

    • $300, includes class time, handouts and homework and access to me for questions in between.

    • Small class size - Only 4 dogs per class

  • Join me for an early morning class to build your dogs trail skills so they can join you on your hike, bike, ski adventures and more as a well behaved companion. A great opportunity to get them out for some mental and physical exercise before you start your day.

    • Skills learned include checking in and staying close on trail, recall, passing other dogs, bikes and runners politely, moving off the trail and staying by your side when needed.

    • This class will meet at a variety of trail heads in Nelson over the duration of the course.

    • This class will run for 4 weeks meeting for an hour at 7:30am on Wednesdays.

    • Some basic training or classes are a helpful prerequisite but not required. Dogs should be comfortable around other dogs on leash.

    • We will work towards being off leash but at no point will this be required. Much of our foundational work will be done on a longline.

    • All dogs must have up to date distemper and parvovirus vaccinations, or have undergone titre testing found to be adequate under direction of a veterinarian.

    • Dogs with a bite history or who are fearful of other dogs are not eligible for group classes. If this is your dog I would love to support you in private sessions. Questions? Reach out.

  • Thats ok!

    • Starting socialization classes before puppies are fully vaccinated is recommended by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviorists to maximize the critical socialization period which ends at 16 weeks.

    • Classes are indoors on a floor sanitized with veterinary disinfectant to make the risk of any kind of disease transmission as low as possible. All humans will sanitize the soles of their shoes upon entry.

    • All puppies’ first set of vaccinations are required in order to participate.

Our Policies

  • We cannot offer make up sessions for missed group classes. Fees paid for group classes that are missed are not refundable.

  • We do not cancel for weather barring extreme circumstances.

  • All dogs in group classes must remain on leash at all times unless instructed otherwise.

  • Dogs displaying signs of coughing, sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy will not be allowed to participate in a training session for the safety of the other dogs.

  • Dog who have a bite history may not be eligible for class. Contact us for more information.
